Karate is a method of weaponless self-defense that develops the body, mind, and spirit. Karate-Do literally means the "art of the empty hand."

Martial arts as a form of physical education was brought by Gichin Funakoshi, a teacher, from the Okinawan Islands to Japan in 1922.  Master Funakoshi was the founder of shotokan, one of the four major styles of karate in the world.  Shotokan karate is taught in this dojo (training hall or school).

Pride in Shotokan, Love for all Martial Arts

Japanese karate has four and most widely practice styles, shotokan, shito-ryu, goju-ryu, and wado-ryu.  BEST KARATE teaches primarily Shotokan style karate but we welcome karate-ka of all Japanese, Okinawa, and Korean styles.  All Japanese karate styles focus on the core of the body for strength and have a balance between hand (punching, striking) and foot (kicking, sweeping) motions.

There's a saying "Pride in shotokan, love for all martial arts."  If you're a retired karate-ka or lost friend of shotokan looking for a rigorous workout with strong kihon (basics), technically precise kata (forms) and bunkai (self defense applications), and kumite (sparring) with spirit and respect, look no further.  You're welcome to train at BEST KARATE.  We have a brand new wooden floor and makiwaras (punching posts).

Sensei Robinson trained with John McClary, formerly a senior student of the renown Teruyuki Okazaki (ISKF, Philadelphia).  Robinson earned his YonDan (fourth degree black belt) before a panel that included Hirokazu Kanazawa, Kenzo Mabuni, and Osamu Ozawa.  For his RokuDan test, Sensei Robinson studied and brought back to the forefront, Hyakuhachi Ho, a forgotten 28th kata in the shotokan system.  Sensei Robinson's competition katas have been Bassai Dai, GojuShiho Dai, Sochin, Unsu, and Hyakuhachi Ho.

Sensei Yu learned shotokan from JKA instructor Kenichi Haramoto and received her Nidan (second degree black belt) from Hidetaka Nishiyama in 1994.  She also studied shito-ryu style karate with Julio Martinez, a student of Minobu Miki, and RyuEiRyu with Tomo Arashiro, sempai to world famous world champion Sakumoto.  For her Godan test, Sensei Yu discussed modern interpretations of traditional karate.

Both Sensei Robinson and Yu have trained with the world's foremost karate and kubodo instructors, including Hirokazu Kanazawa, Masao Kagawa, Mikio Yahara, Teruo Chinen, Toshiro Oshiro, and Kiyoshi Nishime.
